All About Ya Gurl
Wazzup!? My name is Heather, I’ve lived in Arizona my entire life. I have a chihuahua mix named Louis and a ton of house plants. I have tried so many hobbies and skills, but knitting and crochet has been a constant in my life since I was 17.
I was in a photography club in high school and we went on field trips once a month to learn about different types of art and photography. On one field trip we learned how to knit and we each made a square of a blanket that was donated to a veteran.
A handful of us BEGGED the instructors to let us keep the knitting needles. I ran to Joann after school and bought more needles and yarn. I made Christmas gifts for all my family members for the rest of time (whether they liked it or not).
After a few years of trying to make knit amigurumi, and everything turning out very square, I decided to try crochet. I instantly fell in love - I could make stuff so much faster and I could see my work as I was working.
The quality of my work quickly improved and I tried out my first in person market. It did not go well. The outdoor market was on a December evening and it was dark. I’m not sure if I missed something stating we should bring lighting, or if the organizers uuuh…. dropped the ball. For over half the market, I was just kind of sitting in the dark, by myself. None of my friends or family came to visit except one (shout out to Erick!).
I didn’t do another in person market until about 5 years later. I was terrified that my market experience was cursed when it was raining the first few hours. The weather cleared up and I had a super successful day. A bunch of my friends came by, my sister & nephew hung out and I made friends with my booth neighbor!
Support from my friends and family was always lovely, but getting support and hearing positive feedback from strangers gave me a huge confidence boost!
Zip zap zop, here we are!
